Library Policies

Library Hours

Sunday to Thursday, 7:30 to 11:15 and 12:00 to 3:30.

Conduct in the Library

The library welcomes all high school students to use the facility during their free time, including lunch period.  You may eat and drink at the tables (but not at the computers), use your electronic devices, play games, read and socialize. However, you must also: clean up after yourself, keep the noise to a level acceptable to everyone, and not harass others. Abuse of these privileges will result in being banned from the library.

Library Cards

Library Cards are issued to all new high school students during the first week of school.  These cards can be used to access the Destiny system for information about student accounts, the CIS library catalogue, and as a gateway to WebPath Express.  For most students, their username will be the first name, space, last initial.  The password will be the number on your card that starts with a P. If you cannot log in to Destiny, please see the librarian to check your username.

Destiny and WebPath Express

Destiny is the name of CIS’s library system.  You can access Destiny from any computer in the school to search for books in both the elementary and high school library, as well as to check your own account.  To access Destiny, open an internet browser, and type 10.0.0.111 into the address bar.
WebPath Express is an internet search tool that returns relevant, focused, age-appropriate results.  Your teachers and the librarians will provide more information about WebPath Express in the coming weeks.

Circulation

Loan Period

Most books in the high school library can be borrowed for 14 days. Exceptions are:
New Acquisitions – 7 days
Reference books (magazines, dictionaries, thesaurus, yearbooks, etc.) – do not leave the library

Maximum Number of Books

The maximum number of books that can be borrowed at any one time:
Textbooks:       As required
Library Books:  4

Overdue

Students with overdue books cannot check-out library books until the overdue books are returned.

60 day Overdue

Students with books overdue for more that 60 days will not be able to check-out library books OR textbooks until these books are returned or paid for. A final return notice will be issued at this time. If the book is not returned within a week of the final notice, an invoice for the cost of the book(s) will be issued to the student’s parents.

Lost Books or Damaged Books

Students with lost or damaged books will be required to pay for the book before being allowed to check-out additional library books. In addition, report cards will not be released until lost or damaged books have been paid for.
Follow these steps to pay for a lost or damaged book:
1.     Advise the librarian of the loss/damage. She/he will give you an invoice for the replacement cost of the item.
2.     Take this invoice to the accounts office on the main floor and pay for the item.
3.     Request a receipt for your payment. You will only be able to claim a refund if you have this receipt.
4.     Ask the accounts officer to stamp and sign your invoice.
5.     Return the invoice to the high school library. At this point the item will be marked as lost, and will be removed from your account.
6.     If you find the item within 6 months of the issue date of the invoice, you may claim a refund as long as you have the original receipt.

Book Returns

All books must be returned during library hours, to the library “book return” bin. There is no provision for after-hours returns.

Re-shelving Books

If you have removed a book from the shelves, but not checked it out, please leave it in the “Book Return” bin. Do not put it back on the shelves.

Textbooks

Textbooks are checked out through the library and students must put their names on the slip inside the textbook cover.  Students are expected to take care of their textbooks and return them in good condition. Textbooks are due immediately after a course has been completed.
Students who fail to return textbooks on time and in good condition will face consequences including
  • not being able to check-out other textbooks, and
  • withholding of report cards
until the book is either returned or paid for.
The replacement cost of textbooks includes the actual cost of the book, as well as the cost of shipping and processing. Click here for a list of text books with their replacement cost.

Mac Books

Students may use the MacBooks in the library when the cart has not been reserved for another class or during lunch period.  The MacBooks must be signed out in the binder under the “Library” heading, and may not leave the library, unless taken directly to a supervised classroom in the high school corridor.
All MacBooks users must have a signed “MacBook Lab User Rules and Agreement” document on file with the school.
